History and application:
17th century
From fired terracotta clay, including roof and floor tiles. These contain iron oxide.
Colour varies from orange to a warm brownish-red.
At Verfmolen De Kat we use the wind to grind old Dutch roof tiles to make our own tile red.
Can be used in oil, watercolour and acrylic paints.
