Zaansche molen association

The Society of Zaan Mills

The Society was formed in 1925 to prevent the loss of the last few remaining windmills out of the more than 1000 that were built in the Zaanstreek. Now, after more than 80 years, the Society is proud to own 12 working industrial windmills and the unique Mill Museum.

The Society has more than 3600 members, drawn not just from the local population but from all corners of the world. All these people offer their support, from all layers of society. Many of them work as volunteers. De Zaansche Molen is popular wherever it has a presence.

We maintain our windmills and our museum as attractions for a wide public thanks to government subsidies, grants and donations from the business community, charity funds and foundations. Our principal activities involve the maintenance and restoration of living examples of the cultural heritage of the Zaanstreek, with an educational programme.
