History and application:
Ancient
Produced from the roots of the plant Rubia Tinctoria. The plant is found in Southern Europe, but was also once grown commercially in Zeeland.
Can be used to dye wool and silk. The dye has a red colour.
The number and types of mordants used govern the shade obtained.
