History and application:
Ancient
A mineral pigment extracted directly from naturally occurring minerals such as red ochre and red bolus in Hull, England. Nowadays a synthetic iron oxide.
Can be used in lime, glue, casein, oil and varnish paints. English red is heat resistant.
