History and application:
16th century
A red colorant obtained from the fertilised females of the cochineal Coccus insect, which inhabits certain cactus species in the Canary islands.
Can be used to dye wool and silk a purple to bright red colour. 
Colour and shade are governed by the number and type of mordants used.
