History and application:
Ancient
Obtained from the tropical Uruku tree. Seeds are found in the pods which burst open to discharge roughly 80 seeds per pod.
Used to dye textiles.
Soluble in hydrosulphite and fat with potash and alum.
The number and types of mordants govern the final shade obtained..
