History and application:
Derived from the roots of the madder, Rubia Tinctoria. The colour is extracted from the roots in an industrial process.
The plant originates in Southern Europe, but in the 18th century it was cultivated on a large scale in Holland, especially West Brabant and Zeeland.
Madder was vital to the economy of this area.
Can be used to dye wool and silk. A reddish colorant. The number and types of mordants used govern the shade obtained.
